Apply a thin coat of setting-type joint compound — the fast-setting varieties that come in powder form are ideal for ceilings since they cure harder than pre-mixed mud and resist future cracking.

Press new paper tape into the wet compound, smooth it flat with a 6-inch knife, and let it set completely. Apply two to three additional coats, widening each pass with a 10-inch knife. Feather the edges well beyond the seam so they blend invisibly with the surrounding ceiling texture. After the final coat is dry, sand gently with 120-grit sandpaper, prime, and repaint.
